PhD project

The PhD project is one of the most important elements assessed during recruitment to the Doctoral School. The description of the initial concept of the doctoral dissertation is one of the five criteria of the candidates' assessment included in the final grade with a weight of 10%. In addition, it should be noted that during the interview (evaluation criterion with a weight of 40%), members of the recruitment committee ask the candidate about various aspects of the planned PhD  project. That is why it is worth developing a good PhD project.

For this purpose, it is necessary to ensure prior contact with a potential supervisor and then jointly develop a doctoral project in accordance with the requirements set out below. In order to develop a high-quality PhD project, it is necessary to conduct a review of the scientific literature on the planned subject of the doctorate and to conduct an analysis of research methods that can be used in the doctoral dissertation.


The description of the initial concept of the doctoral dissertation should not be longer than 2 A4 pages and should contain:

  • Name and surname of the candidate.
  • The discipline in which the doctoral dissertation will be prepared.
  • Thematic scope of the doctoral dissertation, including the initial definition of the research problem, research hypothesis and expected results.
  • Preliminary plan of research to be carried out.
  • Justification for the selection of the thematic scope of the doctoral dissertation.

When developing a PhD project, it is worth considering the requirements of the Law on Higher Education and Science in the field of the doctoral dissertation (Article 187):

  • The doctoral dissertation demonstrates the candidate’s general theoretical knowledge in a discipline and the ability to conduct research work independently.
  • The subject matter of the doctoral dissertation shall be an original solution to a scientific problem or in terms of the application of results of own scientific research in the economic or social sphere, or an original artistic achievement.
  • The doctoral dissertation may be a written dissertation, including a scientific monograph; a collection of published and thematically related scientific articles; design, construction, technological, implementation.
